Initially acquired by Henry Elgar in 1841, the Surrey Hills area underwent significant development in the late 19th century. The railway line extension to Lilydale in 1882 marked the beginning of real estate consortia development, leading to the establishment of Surrey Hills Post Office in 1884. Housing estates featuring charming period homes, influenced by Victorian, Federation, and Edwardian architecture, were developed with streets adorned by mature Pin Oak and Plane trees.

However, the economic depression of the 1890s halted development until the post-World War I era. In the 1990s, concerns arose with the closure of the last bank branch in Union Road, but on February 24, 2003, the Surrey Hills Community Bank, a branch of Bendigo Bank, opened, providing a financial anchor for the local community.
