The Most Expensive House in Toorak

Toorak Mansion in Melbourne up for sale

Iconic Toorak Estate Cranlana Offered for Sale.

The prestigious Toorak estate known as Cranlana, held by one of Australia’s most notable retail families for over a century, is set to hit the market next month. This historic property, owned by the Myer family, could be Melbourne’s first residential sale to break the $100 million mark.

Cranlana has been a cornerstone of the Myer legacy since it was purchased in 1921 by Sidney Myer, founder of the iconic department store chain, and his second wife, Merlyn. The property, located at 62-62A Clendon Road Toorak, has remained under family ownership for over 100 years, with stewardship passing through the generations via Myer Family Investments (MFI)

As the Myer family’s fifth generation grows, MFI Chairman Sidney Myer has announced the time to hand over this historic residence to a new custodian.

Cranlana has been a significant place for the Myer family for generations. The estate is not only a personal treasure but holds substantial cultural and historical value in Victoria. The Edwardian mansion, one of the largest in Toorak, sits on an expansive 1.1-hectare block and boasts six to eight bedrooms, depending on configuration. It also has a tennis court, pool, and extensive formal gardens.

The property is particularly renowned for its sunken gardens, widely regarded as some of the finest in the state. In Toorak, only one other property—Coonac Estate owned by Paul Little sits on a similarly vast land.

Cranlana was initially built in 1903 but was extensively remodelled by Sidney Myer in 1929, overseen by the architectural firm HW & FB Tompkins, famous for their work on Melbourne’s iconic Myer department stores.

After acquiring additional land in 1932, the estate’s renowned sunken gardens were constructed alongside the elegant Italianate-style wrought iron gates that feature the Myer family’s shield—a nod to its grand heritage. Sidney Myer lived at Cranlana until his passing in 1934.

In the years since, Cranlana has served not only as a home for the Myer family but also as a venue for philanthropic events and the Cranlana Centre for Ethical Leadership, further embedding its significance in Victoria’s cultural landscape.

Melbourne’s luxury property market has seen dramatic growth over the past two decades. Suppose Cranlana achieves a sale price of $100 million or more. In that case, it will join the ranks of Australia’s most valuable homes, though still trailing the country’s highest record—a $130 million sale of Uig Lodge in Point Piper, Sydney, to Atlassian co-founder Scott Farquhar in 2022.
